The banjo is having a moment and honestly, it never really stopped. From the lightning-fast rolls of bluegrass to the earthy, storytelling folk-country sound that artists like Noah Kahan have brought to a whole new generation, the banjo is an instrument with range, personality, and serious cool factor. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, we welcome banjo students ages 8 and up at our studio in Matthews, NC, with faculty who love this instrument across every style it touches.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the teacher best suited to your student’s goals, experience level, and schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what draws them to the banjo, any prior music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
Banjo lessons start with the essentials; how to hold the instrument, right-hand picking technique (including the iconic three-finger Scruggs style used in bluegrass), chord shapes, and developing a feel for the banjo’s distinctive rhythmic drive. Our teachers make these early skills feel natural and achievable, and most students are amazed by how quickly the banjo starts sounding like the real thing. From there, lessons grow into rolls, licks, scales, and songs students love to play.

Lessons are shaped around each student’s musical goals. Some students want to dive deep into traditional bluegrass; others are chasing that indie-folk sound; others just want to learn the songs they love. All of it is welcome here. When students are ready, they can participate in optional studio recitals and casual concerts.
Class details
Banjo lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:

Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our banjo students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.

What age can my child start banjo lessons?
We welcome banjo students ages 8 and up. The banjo requires a certain level of hand coordination and finger independence to develop the picking technique that makes it sound great.
What kind of banjo should my child start on?
Most beginners start on a 5-string banjo, which is the style used in bluegrass and most folk and country playing. Tenor banjos are common in traditional Irish and jazz settings.
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Banjo has a rich tradition of learning by ear and through tablature, and your teacher will introduce music reading gradually alongside playing finding the approach that works best for each student.
What styles of music do you teach?
Bluegrass, country, folk, indie folk, and more. Whether your student wants to play traditional Scruggs-style rolls, strum along to Noah Kahan songs around a campfire, or eventually push the instrument into new territory the way Béla Fleck has, our teachers meet students where their passion is and build from there.
Is the banjo related to the guitar?
They share some similarities, but the banjo has its own distinct picking technique and tuning that makes it its own world. Guitar players often find the banjo approachable, but you can learn with no prior string experience at all.
Can adults take banjo lessons?
Absolutely. The banjo is a fantastic instrument for adult learners… accessible, deeply satisfying, and rooted in a musical tradition that resonates with people of all ages. Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning after time away, our teachers welcome adult students at every level. It’s never too late, and such a gift to give yourself.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable. That said, we hope you’ll develop a love for sharing your music with others!
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.
Where is Charlotte Academy of the Arts located?
We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485, an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties. If you’re looking for banjo lessons in the southeast Charlotte or Union County area, we’re likely closer than you think. Our CAA families enjoy making the most of lesson time buying groceries, getting their nails done, or even getting in a workout right in our shopping center.
