Every great orchestra, every jazz ensemble, every string quartet has one thing in common — the bass is the foundation everything else is built on. The string bass may not always get the spotlight, but ask any conductor or bandleader and they’ll tell you it’s the heartbeat of the music. At CAA, we welcome bass students ages 8 and up at our studio in Matthews, NC, with faculty who understand this instrument’s unique role and know how to develop confident players.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the teacher best suited to your student’s goals, experience level, and schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what draws them to the bass, any prior music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish. There’s no audition, no prior music reading required, and no right way to begin.
String bass lessons start with the fundamentals: proper standing or seated posture, bow hold, left hand position, and producing a full, resonant tone. Because the bass is the largest instrument in the string family, good body mechanics are especially important from the very beginning. From there, lessons grow into scales, arco and pizzicato technique, music reading, and repertoire that prepares students for orchestra, ensemble playing, and beyond.

Students can also participate in studio recitals and receive focused coaching for orchestra auditions. Every performance opportunity at CAA is encouraged yet completely optional.
Class details
Bass lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:

- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our bass students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.

What age can my child start string bass lessons?
We welcome string bass students ages 8 and up. Even the smallest fractional basses require a certain level of physical size and strength to handle comfortably, and starting at the right time sets students up for healthy technique from the beginning. If your child is younger and eager, please reach out. We’re happy to talk through their readiness.
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Reading music is introduced gradually as part of lessons, alongside the playing skills that make it meaningful.
Do I need to buy a bass before the first lesson?
Please wait until after the first lesson. String basses come in multiple fractional sizes, and the right fit is essential for comfort, posture, and good technique. Renting is strongly recommended. Basses are large, expensive instruments and renting keeps your options flexible as your student grows. Your teacher will guide you through the process at your first lesson.
What is the CAA Youth Orchestra?
The CAA Youth Orchestra is one of the most rewarding parts of the CAA string experience, and bass players are absolutely essential to it. Every orchestra needs a strong bass section, and our students get to discover firsthand what it means to be the foundation of an ensemble. Ask us about eligibility when you enroll.
Bass players seem hard to find. Is that true?
It absolutely is. Strong bass players are among the most in-demand musicians in orchestras, jazz ensembles, and school music programs. Students who choose the bass often find that doors open quickly, from orchestra placement to ensemble opportunities, simply because great bassists are rare and always needed.
Can you help my child prepare for a school or community orchestra audition?
Yes! Our teacher is experienced in audition preparation and will work with your student on the specific repertoire, scales, and sight-reading skills needed to audition with confidence.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable. That said, we hope you’ll develop a love for sharing your music with others!
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.
Where is Charlotte Academy of the Arts located?
We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485, an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties. If you’re looking for string bass lessons in the southeast Charlotte or Union County area, we’re likely closer than you think.
