There’s a moment every new cello student experiences. That first bow across the strings is unforgettable. Kids who begin cello lessons often can’t believe how quickly it feels like theirs. Many adults have long dreamed of learning to play this beautiful instrument as well. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, we welcome cello students ages 5 and up, with faculty who are passionate about this instrument and dedicated to making every student fall in love with it, too.
What to expect
At the first lesson your teacher will get to know your student: what drew them to the cello, any prior music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
From there, lessons are built around the student. Our cello teacher develops strong foundational technique… posture, bow hold, hand position, and tone production while keeping students engaged with music they love. Because the cello is a larger instrument, proper body technique and posture are especially important from the start, and our teacher takes care to build those habits early. Parents of younger beginners are encouraged to sit in during the first months to help reinforce good practice habits at home.

Our cello instruction is led by a faculty member who teaches across the full string family bringing a deep understanding of how string instruments relate to one another and how to develop well-rounded, musically literate students. Lessons are personalized to each student’s goals, pace, and musical interests, with technique and repertoire chosen to keep students challenged and motivated.
Cello students at CAA are part of something bigger than their weekly lesson. They can join the CAA Orchestra, studio recitals, and the NFMC Festival. Students pursuing school or community orchestra placement receive focused audition coaching to help them walk in prepared and confident.
Class details
Cello lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:

- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our cello students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.

What age can my child start cello lessons?
We welcome cello students ages 5 and up. Small fractional cellos make the instrument accessible even for young beginners, and starting early builds excellent ear training, musicianship, and technique that compounds over time.
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Reading music is part of what we teach, introduced gradually alongside playing so it never feels overwhelming.
Do I need to buy a cello before the first lesson?
We recommend waiting until after the first lesson so your teacher can confirm the correct size for your child. Cellos range from 1/8 size all the way up to full size, and the right fit is essential for comfort and good technique. Renting is a smart and practical choice, especially for younger students who will size up as they grow.
Who teaches cello at CAA?
Cello is taught by a member of our string faculty who also teaches violin, viola, and bass — bringing a comprehensive understanding of the string family to every lesson. This breadth of knowledge is a real asset, especially for students who may want to explore more than one string instrument over time.
What is the CAA Youth Orchestra?
The CAA Youth Orchestra is one of the crown jewels of our string program. Cello is a cornerstone of any orchestra, and our students get to experience that firsthand — playing alongside peers, developing ensemble skills, and discovering the unique joy of making music as part of a group. Ask us about eligibility when you enroll.
Can you help my child prepare for a school or community orchestra audition?
Absolutely. Our cello teacher is experienced in audition preparation and will work with your student on the specific repertoire, scales, and sight-reading skills they need to audition with confidence.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.

We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485 — an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
