Bright and singing up high and warm in the lower register, the clarinet has a range of expression that few instruments can match. It’s a cornerstone of classical music, a star of jazz and swing, and one of the most popular instruments in school band programs. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, we welcome clarinet students ages 7 and up, with experienced faculty who teach across classical, jazz, pop, contemporary, and beyond at our studio in Matthews, NC.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the teacher best suited to your student’s goals, experience level, and schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what draws them to the clarinet, any prior music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
Clarinet lessons start with the essentials; how to assemble and care for the instrument, proper embouchure, breath support, and producing a clear, focused tone. These early fundamentals make a real difference down the road, and our teachers are skilled at making them feel achievable rather than overwhelming. From there, lessons expand into technique, scales, music reading, and repertoire tailored to whatever styles motivate each student most.

Lessons are shaped around each student’s goals. Some students are preparing for school band or working toward first chair; others are drawn to jazz improvisation or simply want to play music they love. All of it is welcome here. When students are ready, they can participate in studio recitals, casual concerts, and the NFMC Festival, all completely optional, all on their own timeline.
Class details
Clarinet lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:

- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our clarinet students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.
FAQs
What age can my child start clarinet lessons?
We generally recommend starting around ages 8 and up. The clarinet requires a certain level of hand size, finger strength, and physical development to hold and play comfortably. If your child is younger and eager, reach out. We’re happy to chat about their readiness.
Is my child ready to start? I have some specific questions about their development.
Every child is different, and some readiness questions, like dental development and its effect on embouchure, are best answered by our clarinet teachers directly. Feel free to reach out to discuss!
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Learning to read music is introduced gradually as part of lessons.
What should I look for when buying or renting a clarinet?
Student-model clarinets vary significantly in quality, and very inexpensive instruments can make learning harder and more frustrating than it needs to be. Your teacher can point you toward reliable options at your first lesson. Renting from a reputable music store is a great way to start, especially while your student is still growing into the instrument.
What are reeds and how do they work?
Reeds are the small pieces of cane that attach to the mouthpiece and vibrate to produce sound, and they’re a regular consumable, like guitar strings. They’re inexpensive and easy to find, and your teacher will walk you through everything you need to know about selecting and caring for them from day one.
My child is already in school band. Will private lessons help?
Tremendously! Private lessons offer the individual attention that school band simply can’t provide; targeted technique work, tone development, and a pace set entirely around your child. Most band students who add private lessons notice a significant improvement quickly, and band becomes a lot more enjoyable when the fundamentals are solid.
What styles of music do you teach?
Our clarinet teachers work across classical, jazz, pop, contemporary, and more. We find the music that motivates each student and build the strong foundational technique that makes every style possible.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable. That said, we hope you’ll develop a love for sharing your music with others!
Can adults take clarinet lessons?
Absolutely. Whether you played in school and want to pick it back up, or you’re starting completely fresh, our teachers welcome adult students of every level. It’s never too late, and such a gift to give yourself.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.

We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485, an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
