Some kids are born to play drums — and if yours is one of them, you already know it. The constant tapping, the air drumming, the way they turn every surface into an instrument. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, we take that energy and turn it into real skill. Drum lessons for students ages 5 and up, taught by faculty who know how to channel enthusiasm into technique and turn natural rhythm into something truly musical.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match your student with the teacher best suited to their goals and experience level and find a weekly time that works for your schedule.
From there, lessons are built around the student. Our drum teachers develop real technique… proper grip, stick control, coordination, reading rhythm notation, and building a solid sense of timing while keeping things engaging and age-appropriate.

Class details
Drum lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s routine. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:
- 30 minutes $39
- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our drum students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.
FAQs
What age can my child start drum lessons?
We welcome drum students ages 5 and up. Young beginners start with fundamental coordination and rhythm exercises that build the foundation for everything that comes later and kids who start early often develop an exceptional natural sense of timing.
Does my child need a drum kit at home before starting?
Not right away. Beginners can start with just a practice pad and drumsticks, which are inexpensive and easy to find. Soon after a drum kit will be needed for practice at home. This can be an acoustic set or electronic. Your teacher will be happy to provide guidance on selecting a drum kit.
Won't a drum kit at home be incredibly loud?
It’s a fair concern! Electronic drum kits are a popular solution for families who need to keep the volume down. They can be played with headphones and are significantly quieter than an acoustic kit.
Does my child need any prior experience or musical background?
None at all. We welcome complete beginners and students who have never touched a drum in their life. All you need is enthusiasm and a sense of rhythm.
What styles of music do you teach?
Our drum teachers work across rock, pop, jazz, funk, Latin, and more. We find the music that motivates each student and build strong technique from there.
Will my child learn to read music?
Yes, drum students learn to read rhythm notation, which is an important part of becoming a well-rounded musician. It also prepares students who want to participate in school band or ensemble programs down the road.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.
Where is Charlotte Academy of the Arts located?
We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485, an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties. If you’re looking for drum lessons in the southeast Charlotte or Union County area, we’re likely closer than you think.
