That clear, singing tone of the flute is impossible to miss. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, we welcome flute students ages 7 and up, teaching everything from classical to jazz, pop, and contemporary styles at our studio in Matthews, NC.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the teacher best suited to your student’s goals, experience level, and schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what draws them to the flute, any prior music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
Flute lessons start with the fundamentals; embouchure, breath support, and tone production. Getting a good sound out of the flute is genuinely one of the most satisfying early milestones, and our teachers know how to get students there quickly and enjoyably. From there, lessons expand into technique, music reading, scales, and repertoire across whatever styles motivate each student most.

Whether your child is working toward school band, exploring flute as their primary instrument, or an adult fulfilling a lifelong dream, our teachers tailor the experience accordingly. When students are ready, they can participate in optional performance opportunities including studio recitals, and the NFMC Festival. Every opportunity is opt-in, and your teacher will help you decide what makes sense for your student.
Class details
Flute lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:
- 30 minutes $39
- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our flute students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.
FAQs
What age can my child start flute lessons?
We generally recommend flute lessons starting around age 6 or 7. Unlike some instruments that come in smaller sizes for young children, the standard flute requires a certain arm length and hand size to hold comfortably and correctly. Starting too early can lead to poor posture and technique that’s hard to undo later. That said, every child develops differently. If your child is younger and eager, reach out and we’re happy to assess their readiness.
What about curved headjoints for younger beginners?
Curved headjoints are a popular accommodation that allows younger or smaller students to hold the flute more comfortably by shortening the reach. Families can rent or purchase a curved headjoint separately, and your teacher can advise on whether it’s a good fit for your child. It’s a great option for motivated younger students who simply aren’t quite big enough for the standard instrument yet.
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Reading music is introduced gradually as part of lessons.
What should I look for when buying or renting a flute?
Student-model flutes vary significantly in quality, and it’s easy to end up with an instrument that makes learning harder than it needs to be. Your teacher can point you toward reliable brands and help you avoid the common pitfall of purchasing a very inexpensive instrument that won’t hold up or play in tune. Renting from a reputable music store is also a great option, especially when starting out.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.
My child is already in school band. Will private lessons help?
Absolutely, and dramatically so! Private lessons give students the individual attention that simply isn’t possible in a band or ensemble setting addressing specific technique issues, working on tone quality, and moving at a pace tailored to the individual student. Many school band students find that private lessons accelerate their progress and make band itself much more enjoyable.
What styles of music do you teach?
Our flute teachers work across classical, jazz, pop, contemporary, and more. We find the music that motivates each student and build strong foundational technique that supports any style.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable. That said, we hope you’ll develop a love for sharing your music with others!
Can adults take flute lessons?
Absolutely. Whether you played in school and want to pick it back up, or you’re starting completely fresh, our teachers love working with adult students. It’s never too late, and such a gift to give yourself.Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485, an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
