The mandolin has a sound that’s instantly transporting, bright, ringing, and deeply rooted in some of America’s most beloved musical traditions. From bluegrass and country to folk and rock, it’s an instrument with real character. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, we welcome mandolin students ages 7 and up at our studio in Matthews, NC, with faculty who love this instrument and know how to make it accessible and exciting for students of every level.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the teacher best suited to your student’s goals, experience level, and schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what draws them to the mandolin, any prior music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
Mandolin lessons start with the fundamentals; how to hold the instrument, proper pick technique, forming chords, and developing the right-hand tremolo that gives the mandolin its signature sustained sound. Our teachers make these early skills feel natural and rewarding, and most students are surprised by how quickly they start sounding like the real thing. From there, lessons expand into scales, music reading, and a repertoire built around whatever styles each student is most passionate about.

Class details
Mandolin lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:
- 30 minutes $39
- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our mandolin students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.

What age can my child start mandolin lessons?
We welcome mandolin students ages 7 and up. The mandolin is compact and manageable for younger students, and the earlier they start building good pick technique and ear training, the stronger their foundation will be.
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Reading music is introduced gradually as part of lessons, though many mandolin styles also make use of tablature. Your teacher will find the approach that works best for your student.
Is the mandolin related to the guitar or violin?
A little of both. The mandolin is tuned the same as a violin — which makes it a natural next step for string players — but it’s played with a pick like a guitar. Students with experience on either instrument often find the mandolin surprisingly approachable, and complete beginners pick it up faster than they expect.
What styles of music do you teach?
Our mandolin teachers work across bluegrass, country, folk, and more. We find the music that motivates each student and build strong foundational technique that supports any direction they want to take the instrument.
Can adults take mandolin lessons?
Absolutely. The mandolin is a wonderful instrument for adult learners, compact, affordable, and deeply satisfying to play. Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning after time away, our teachers welcome adult students at every level. It’s never too late, and such a gift to give yourself.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable. That said, we hope you’ll develop a love for sharing your music with others!
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.

We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485, an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
