Why Music Matters for Little Ones

If you’ve ever watched a toddler completely lose it (in the best way) over a silly song in the car, you already know. Kids and music are just a match made in heaven, and it turns out there’s real magic happening in those little brains every time they sing, dance, or bang on something. Here’s the case for why music deserves a spot in your little one’s weekly routine, whether they’re 3 months old and just discovering their own giggle, or already 4 or 5 and ready to sing, dance, and act their way through their favorite storybook.

What music is quietly doing for your child

It’s basically a brain workout. Music has been shown to boost memory, problem-solving, and language skills. All that giggling and shaking of egg shakers? Secretly building brainpower.
Music helps kids (and adults) feel their feelings. Singing, dancing, playing instruments, all of it gives kids a healthy outlet for big emotions, and helps them build empathy and confidence along the way.
It sharpens their listening. Music classes teach kids to actually tune in and notice different sounds, which pays off later when they’re learning to read.
Music (& theatre class) a friend-making machine. Group classes give your little one a low-pressure way to be around other kids their age, take turns, and start building those early social skills (and give you a chance to chat with other parents who get it).
It sets them up for reading. There’s a real connection between music and phonological awareness, aka the ability to hear and play with sounds in words, which is huge for early literacy.
The arts fuel their imagination. Whether they’re pretending to be a lion or twirling like a princess, music invites kids to be creative and a little silly, which is exactly what this age is all about.

Finding the right class matters. You want something that actually fits your kid’s age and stage, not a one-size-fits-all situation. And find a location that’s not too far away to mess with naptime and carline. Here’s what we’ve got for the littlest performers at Charlotte Academy of the Arts in the Matthews area.

Kindermusik (ages 0-3)

Our Kindermusik program is led by Missy Wilson of Kindermusik with Missy, a Kindermusik Top Program and definitely the person you want teaching your baby their first songs. It’s broken into three stages:

Foundations (ages 0-1): snuggly, sensory-rich classes where you and baby explore sounds and movement together
Level 1 (ages 1-2): wobbly walkers dancing, babbling along, and building early language and confidence
Level 2 (ages 2-3): big energy channeled into singing, instrument play, and dancing developing motor skills and enhancing cognitive development

Classes meet weekly at our Matthews studio (very close to our Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Lake Park, and Harrisburg neighbors, too) on Mondays. You’ll even have access to the Kindermusik app so you can keep the music going at home, in the car, or during that witching hour before bed.

What's next? (ages 4-5)

Once your little one has graduated from lap songs to full-on performing for the family in the living room, Mini Stars: Storybooks is where they belong. It’s part music class (so they can continue building on that excellent foundation from Kindermusik), part drama class, part dance party, all wrapped up in beloved stories like Snow White, Peter Pan, and The Wizard of Oz.

At ages 4 and 5, children are not ready for formal voice lessons, and that’s okay. We want to protect those little, growing voices. What children ages 4 and 5 are ready for is exactly what this class is built around: singing songs that do not push the voice, learning to match pitch, feel a steady beat, and move to music with real control. Every 30-minute class is packed with singing and movement that helps kids develop rhythm, keep a steady beat while dancing or marching along, and start using their singing voice with more confidence.

And because it’s a real class, not just a playdate with songs, your child is also quietly picking up some serious school-readiness skills:

Listening and following directions: learning to tune into a teacher’s voice and follow along with the group
Communication: using words, expression, and their voice to tell a story or share an idea
Being part of a class: sitting in a circle, waiting their turn, and being part of a group
Social skills: making friends, working alongside other kids their age, and learning a little patience along the way
Motor skills: pre-dance and movement activities that build coordination, balance, and body awareness

So while they think they’re just twirling around as Ariel or skipping off to see the Wizard, they’re actually building rhythm, pitch, listening skills, and confidence, all wrapped up in a story they’ll beg to act out again at home. Our Mini Stars fall session ends with a sweet sharing performance you will absolutely be recording! We also have a Mini Stars Spring session.

Start early, mama. You genuinely can’t start too soon. Even newborns benefit from music, which is why Kindermusik welcomes babies as young as 3 months.

Find your people. Music and theatre classes are also a great excuse to meet other Charlotte-area parents who have similar interests as you.

At the end of the day, the performing arts are just as much for little ones as it is for older kids. Everyday investments that pays off big, whether it shows up as a shaker in tiny hands or a starring role in a living room production of The Little Mermaid. So go ahead, get your littles enrolled, put on their favorite song in the car this afternoon, and enjoy watching them light up.
