Few instruments have the cool factor of the saxophone. From the smoky warmth of a jazz ballad to the driving energy of rock and pop, the saxophone has carved out a place in virtually every genre of music and it has a way of making everyone in the room stop and listen. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, we teach alto and tenor saxophone to students ages 7 and up, across jazz, pop, rock, contemporary, and beyond at our studio in Matthews, NC.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the teacher best suited to your student’s goals, experience level, and schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what draws them to the saxophone, any prior music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
Saxophone lessons start with the essentials; how to assemble and care for the instrument, proper embouchure, breath support, and producing a clear, resonant tone. Our teachers make these early fundamentals feel achievable and even fun, because getting a great sound out of the saxophone early on is one of the most motivating things a new student can experience. From there, lessons grow into technique, scales, music reading, and repertoire across whatever styles excite each student most.

Our saxophone faculty bring real performance experience and genuine love for teaching to every lesson. They understand what it takes to build a strong foundation on the instrument and know how to make the process engaging and rewarding for students of every age and level.
Lessons are built around each student’s goals. Some students want to play jazz; others are chasing that classic rock or pop sound. All of it is welcome here! When students are ready, they can participate in studio recitals and casual concerts — all completely optional.
Class details
Saxophone lessons are held once per week on the same day and timeso it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:
- 30 minutes $39
- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our saxophone students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.
FAQs
What age can my child start saxophone lessons?
We generally recommend starting around age 8. The saxophone requires a certain level of hand size, lung capacity, and physical development to play comfortably and correctly. If your child is younger and eager, please reach out. We’re happy to chat about their readiness for lessons.
What's the difference between alto and tenor saxophone?
The alto saxophone is smaller, lighter, and pitched higher making it the most popular choice for beginners, especially younger students. The tenor is larger with a deeper, fuller sound and is common in jazz and rock settings. Many students start on alto and may explore tenor later as they advance. Your teacher can help you decide which is the right fit at enrollment.
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Reading music is introduced gradually as part of lessons.
What should I look for when buying or renting a saxophone?
Student model saxophones vary widely in quality. Your teacher can point you toward reliable brands at your first lesson. Renting from a reputable music store is a smart starting point. This keeps your options flexible and ensures you’re working with an instrument that operates and plays well.
What about reeds?
Reeds are the small pieces of cane that attach to the mouthpiece and vibrate to create sound — and they’re a regular consumable, a bit like guitar strings. They’re inexpensive and easy to find, and your teacher will walk you through everything you need to know about selecting, caring for, and replacing them right from the start.
My child is already in school band — will private lessons help?
Absolutely. Private lessons give students something school band simply can’t offer… individual attention, focused technique work, and progress at a pace tailored specifically to them. Most band students who add private lessons notice a meaningful improvement quickly, and band itself becomes much more enjoyable when the fundamentals are solid.
What styles of music do you teach?
Jazz, pop, rock, contemporary, and more. Our saxophone teachers find the music that motivates each student and buildd the foundational technique that makes every style accessible. Whether your student wants to sound like a jazz legend or their favorite pop artist, we meet them where their passion is.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable. That said, we hope you’ll develop a love for sharing your music with others!
Can adults take saxophone lessons?
Absolutely. The saxophone is a fantastic instrument for adult learners. It’s approachable, immediately rewarding, and endlessly fun to play. Whether you’re a complete beginner or returning after years away, our teachers welcome adult students at every level. It’s never too late, and such a gift to give yourself.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.

We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485, an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
