The viola is one of music’s best kept secrets. Richer and deeper than the violin, with a warm, resonant tone that sits at the heart of every orchestra and string ensemble, the viola is an instrument that rewards those who choose it. At Charlotte Academy of the Arts, our string faculty teach viola to students ages 6 and up building strong technique, musical sensitivity, and a genuine love for this beautiful instrument.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the viola teacher best suited to your goals, experience level, and schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what draws them to the viola, any prior string or music experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish.
From there, lessons are built around the student. Our teachers develop strong foundational technique… posture, bow hold, tone production, and the particular nuances of reading alto clef while keeping students connected to music they love.

Beyond private lessons, viola students can join the Charlotte Academy of the Arts Orchestra, perform in studio recitals, participate in the NFMC Festival, and receive focused coaching for orchestra auditions. These opportunities are encouraged but completely optional.
Class details
Viola lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s routine. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:

Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our viola students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.

What age can my child start viola lessons?
We welcome viola students ages 6 and up. Even the smallest fractional violas are a bit larger than their violin equivalents, so a little extra physical development goes a long way. If your child is younger and eager, reach out — we’re happy to chat about whether they’re ready, and our violin program is a wonderful starting point for younger students who can transition to viola when the time is right.
Is viola similar to violin? Can my child switch from one to the other?
Yes — viola and violin share the same foundational technique, making it relatively natural to transition between the two. The main differences are the larger body size, the deeper tuning, and the use of alto clef rather than treble clef for reading music. Many string students try both and find their true home on one or the other. Our teachers can help guide that exploration.
Does my child need prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every age. Reading music — including the alto clef unique to viola — is something your teacher will introduce gradually alongside playing.
Do I need to buy a viola before the first lesson?
We recommend waiting until after the first lesson so your teacher can help determine the correct size. Violas come in fractional sizes for younger students and several body lengths for older players. Many families choose to rent first, which is a great option while students are still growing.
What is the CAA Youth Orchestra?
The CAA Youth Orchestra is one of the highlights of our string program — and viola students are a vital part of it. Playing in an ensemble teaches listening, musicianship, and the unique experience of making music as part of a group. Ask us about eligibility and how to get involved when you enroll.
I've heard viola players are always in demand — is that true?
It absolutely is. Violists are consistently sought after in school orchestras, youth ensembles, and college music programs. Choosing the viola can open doors that are genuinely harder to walk through as a violinist simply due to supply and demand. Our teachers love helping students realize just how valuable — and versatile — their instrument is.
Can you help my child prepare for a school or community orchestra audition?
Yes — our teachers are experienced in audition preparation and will work with your student on the specific repertoire, scales, and sight-reading skills needed to audition with confidence.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.
Where is Charlotte Academy of the Arts located?
We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485 — an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
