The violin is expressive, versatile, and has a way of drawing people in. Violin lessons at Charlotte Academy of the Arts are for students ages 5 and up, taught across a range of styles from classical technique to folk and beyond at our Matthews, NC studio, where every student is set up to succeed.
What to expect
Before your first lesson, we match you with the teacher best suited to your goals, experience level, and musical interests — and we find a weekly time that works for your schedule. Your teacher will get to know your student: what drew them to the violin, any prior experience, and what they’re hoping to accomplish. There’s no audition, no prior music reading required, and no pressure to arrive knowing anything at all.
From there, lessons are built around the student. Our teachers develop strong foundational technique — posture, bow hold, tone production — while keeping students engaged with music they love. Parents of younger beginners are encouraged to sit in, especially in the early months, to help reinforce good habits at home between lessons.

What sets CAA apart is the community students become part of. Beyond private lessons, our violin students have the opportunity to join our Queen City Strings, a valuable experience that teaches ensemble playing skills and the joy of making music together. Students may also choose to participate in studio recitals, the NFMC Festival, as well as receive focused coaching for orchestra auditions.
Class details
Violin lessons are held once per week on the same day and time so it becomes a natural part of your family’s schedule. We offer three lesson lengths to fit different ages, attention spans, and goals:

- 45 minutes $58.50
- 60 minutes $78
Our lessons run year-round, which keeps students progressing consistently and avoiding the regression that comes with breaks in their schedule. We will help you choose the best lesson length at enrollment, and it’s easy to adjust as your student grows.
What’s included
Our violin students receive one-on-one instruction, weekly practice assignments, and access to all optional performance opportunities. As a CAA student, you’ll also have first access to our special events throughout the year including PopArts Kids Night Out, holiday events, and exclusive performance opportunities that go beyond the lesson studio. New students are welcomed to the Charlotte Academy of the Arts family with a tote bag upon enrollment.

What age can my child start violin lessons?
We welcome violin students ages 5 and up. Violin is actually one of the best instruments for young beginners as the instrument comes in various sized making it accessible for children. Early starters often develop exceptional ear training and high musical aptitude!
Does my child need any prior experience or the ability to read music?
Not at all. We welcome complete beginners at every level. Learning to read music is part of what we teach, and your teacher will introduce it gradually alongside playing.
Do I need to buy a violin before the first lesson?
Violins come in several fractional sizes (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full), and the right fit makes a real difference in comfort and progress. We recommend families with children starting lessons to visit The Violin Shoppe in Charlotte to be appropriately sized. Many families choose to rent at first, especially for younger students who will size up as they grow.
What is the CAA Youth Orchestra?
Our youth orchestra, Queen City Strings, is one of the things that makes our string program truly special. It gives violin students the opportunity to play alongside peers in an ensemble setting — developing listening skills, ensemble awareness, and the unique joy of making music as part of a group. Ask us about eligibility and how to get involved when you enroll.
Can you help my child prepare for a school or community orchestra audition?
Absolutely. Our teachers are experienced in audition preparation and will work with your student on the specific repertoire, scales, and sight-reading skills needed to walk in confident and ready.
What styles of music do you teach?
Our violin teachers work across classical, fiddle, folk, and more. We build strong foundational technique that supports any style, and we love helping students explore the full range of what the violin can do.
Do students have to perform in recitals?
All performance opportunities, including recitals, concerts, festivals, and orchestra, are completely optional. We encourage students to share their music when they’re ready, but we never pressure anyone to perform before they feel comfortable.
What if my child misses a lesson?
Your teacher will share their makeup and cancellation policies with you upon enrollment. If you need to cancel, please reach out to your teacher as soon as possible.

We’re located in Idlewild Market, Matthews, NC, just off I-485 — an easy drive for families throughout the area. We serve students from Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Harrisburg, Weddington, Stallings, Monroe, Charlotte, and across both Mecklenburg and Union Counties.
